Didn’t this building used to be something else? The Hálaadás háza stands before us. It is a place filled with stories of terror and resilience.

The House of Terror Museum is located at Andrássy Avenue 60 in Budapest. This museum is not about fictional horror. It shows real-life terror. It commemorates victims of fascist and communist regimes in 20th-century Hungary. Those held captive were tortured or killed in this very building.

The museum opened on February 24 2002. Mária Schmidt is its director general. The House of Terror is a member of the Platform of European Memory and Conscience.

Before becoming a museum the building served different purposes. It was used by the Arrow Cross Party. It also housed the ÁVH. The ÁVH was a communist secret police.

Viktor Orbán’s government set up the museum. In December 2000 the Public Foundation for the Research of Central and East European History and Society purchased the building. They wanted to create a museum to remember Hungary’s fascist and communist past.

The building underwent a year-long renovation. Attila F. Kovács designed the interior. He also designed the exterior facade. János Sándor and Kálmán Újszászy designed the reconstruction plans. The exterior is now a monument. The black structure stands out on Andrássy Avenue. Inside a T-54 tank is on display.

The permanent exhibition focuses on Hungary’s relationship with Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union. Exhibits detail Hungarian organizations. These include the fascist Arrow Cross Party. Also, the communist ÁVH is showcased. Visitors can see cells in the basement. The ÁVH used these cells to torture prisoners.

Information sheets are available in both English and Hungarian. Audio guides come in multiple languages. These include German Spanish Russian and Italian. The background music was composed by Ákos Kovács. He is a former member of Bonanza Banzai. The score includes string orchestras and special sound effects.

Some historians say the museum focuses too much on Hungary as a victim. They argue it does not recognize Hungarian contributions to the regimes. Others say more space is given to communist terror than fascist terror. Supporters note the communist period lasted forty years. The fascist regime lasted less than a year. They also remind critics that the Hungarian Holocaust has its own museum.

The House of Terror is more than just a museum. It is a reminder of a dark past. It honors those who suffered. It also teaches about the importance of freedom. It is a must-see for anyone visiting Budapest. It prompts reflection on history. It encourages a commitment to preventing such atrocities from happening again.
