In 1902, Hiroshima Higher Normal School was established. It became a key national institution. It trained secondary school teachers. This school earned the nickname “head temple of regular teachers”. This highlights its significant contribution to education.

Hiroshima University of Literature and Science followed in 1929. It served as a research base for educational studies and pedagogy. These forerunners highlight Hiroshima’s commitment to academic excellence.

Later, in 1943, Hiroshima Normal School was established. It continued the legacy of teacher training. A year later, Hiroshima Young Men’s Normal School was founded. It specialized in vocational education. Finally, in 1945, Hiroshima Women’s Higher Normal School was established. It focused on training female teachers.

In 1949, these schools merged to form the Hiroshima University School of Education. This amalgamation was unique in Japan. No other school had ever combined such diverse institutions. This marked a comprehensive approach to education.

The School of Education further developed over the years. Branch schools were established. These included the Yasuura Branch School, the Shinonome Branch School and the Mihara Branch School. The School of School Education was established in 1978. In 2000, they were reintegrated into a single school at the Higashihiroshima campus.

The Graduate School of Education also evolved. Hiroshima University of Literature and Science produced outstanding researchers. In 1953, the Graduate School of Education was launched. It offered doctoral programs. This solidified Hiroshima’s role in advanced educational research.

In 2004, Hiroshima University became a National University Corporation. The School and Graduate School of Education continued to progress. They retained the traditions of education. These traditions had been cultivated throughout Hiroshima University’s history.
