In 1911, a small group of Hakka believers gathered near a cemetery in Shuang Long Shan. This unusual meeting place marked the humble beginnings of the Hakka Methodist Church. Today, we stand before a very different structure. The Hakka Methodist Church, established officially in 1949, has grown significantly from its early days. The church’s journey reflects the perseverance and faith of the Hakka community in Singapore. The original meetings near the cemetery eventually led to a more permanent home on Mount Sophia. After World War II, the congregation moved to a colonial bungalow in the Newton Road vicinity, where the church stands today. The Hakka Methodist Church isn’t just a building. It’s a testament to the enduring spirit of its community. In 1966, a thousand-pound aluminum cross was hoisted atop the church tower by two RAF helicopters, a dramatic symbol of the church’s mission. This striking feature remains a prominent part of the church’s identity. The Hakka Methodist Church is known for its unique services conducted entirely in the Hakka language. It’s currently the only church in Singapore to offer this. The church has a rich history. It continues to serve as a vital center for the Hakka community. The church’s 75th-anniversary celebrations included a 33.6km walk. This walk traced the historical milestones of the church, connecting members of different generations to their shared heritage. The Hakka Methodist Church is dedicated to preserving its traditions while embracing the future. The church provides online streaming of its Saturday evening Hakka service on YouTube. This allows a wider audience, including those who cannot physically attend, to connect with their faith and community. The Hakka Methodist Church is more than just a place of worship. It’s a living testament to the resilience, faith, and community of the Hakka people in Singapore.
