Established in 2016 Haji Zainul Abidin Sixth Form College stands proudly on Jalan Hamilton. This isn’t just any college. It’s the culmination of a rich history. A history rooted in the former Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Haji Zainul Abidin. Imagine a bustling school with 739 students. 58 teachers guided these students. This vibrant school eventually transitioned into the college we see today.

The college’s story begins long before 2016. In 1964 informal classes started. Mr Lim Chiang Choo and Mr Khoo-Yeoh Gan Hong laid the foundation. Students from Westlands and Tanjong Secondary Schools joined. The school initially resided on Scotland Road. It was a mangosteen plantation then. The school officially opened in 1965. It was known as Scotland Road Secondary School. Two school buildings were constructed. Tan Sri Wong Pow Nee the then Chief Minister officially opened it in 1967.

In 1972 the school was renamed Haji Zainul Abidin Secondary School. This honored a local Malay educationist. The school became known for its pioneering work. It was the first in Penang to admit visually impaired students. This was through the Blind Students Assimilation Programme in 1982.

In 2009 the school moved. Its new location is its current Jalan Hamilton address. The old Scotland Road site was then taken over by Sekolah Menengah Agama Lelaki Al-Mansoor. Today Haji Zainul Abidin Sixth Form College thrives. It continues a legacy of educational excellence. It’s a testament to the vision of those who started it all. This college isn’t just bricks and mortar. It’s a living legacy of learning and community. A place where students strive for success. A place steeped in history. A beacon of hope and opportunity for Penang’s youth. Remember this story when you pass by. Remember the journey. Remember Haji Zainul Abidin Sixth Form College.
