Across the Yangtze River from the bustling metropolis of Shanghai, lies the Haimen District. A place where the river kisses the sea, Haimen, literally meaning “sea gate,” offers a captivating blend of history, industry, and natural beauty. Haimen District wasn’t always the thriving area you see hints of today. It emerged from the silt deposits carried by the mighty Yangtze, forming sandbanks that eventually merged with the mainland during the Tang Dynasty. In 958 CE, during the Later Zhou Dynasty, Haimen County was officially established. Its initial county seat was in Dongzhou Town. Did you know that Haimen District has a nickname? It’s called “The River Gateway to the Sea”. The strategic location of Haimen District, near the mouth of the Yangtze, has shaped its history. The shifting river course has brought both prosperity and challenges. Flooding was a recurring threat, reshaping the landscape and impacting the communities that called Haimen District home. The county seat migrated over time, reflecting these environmental changes. In 1672, it moved to Jinghai Township, then in 1768, to Maojia Town. Haimen District’s administrative status has also evolved. It transitioned from a county to an independent subprefecture, back to a county, then to a county-level city in 1994, finally becoming a district of Nantong in 2020. The story of Haimen District is deeply intertwined with Zhang Jian, a prominent industrialist and educator. Born in 1853, Zhang Jian championed the connection between education and industry. He played a crucial role in developing the region, establishing what’s often referred to as the “first modern city” in the Jianghai Plain. Sites like the Zhang Jian Youth Study Center, Zhang Jian Memorial Hall, and Yisheng Cultural Park commemorate his legacy. Haimen District boasts a humid subtropical climate, experiencing distinct seasons with hot summers and cold winters. The summers tend to be rainier, often leading to flooding. The district’s average temperature is a pleasant 15.2 °C (59.4 °F), but it’s seen extremes ranging from a scorching 39.7 °C (103.5 °F) to a frigid −9.4 °C (15.1 °F). With convenient access to both the Yangtze River and the Yellow Sea, Haimen District enjoys excellent transportation links. It’s a short drive from both Shanghai Pudong International Airport and Nantong Xingdong Airport. The district is also connected to the national highway system and boasts its own developing seaport. Haimen Railway Station, opened in 2019, provides rail connections to other major cities. Haimen District is more than just a geographical location; it’s a testament to resilience, adaptation, and the transformative power of human endeavor. From silt deposits to a dynamic district, Haimen continues to evolve, carrying the echoes of its past while embracing the promise of the future.
