Founded in 1955 Haigazian University stands proudly in Beirut’s bustling business district. This isn’t just any university. It’s a testament to resilience hope and the enduring power of education. Haigazian University began as Haigazian College with just 43 students. It was a bold vision born from tragedy. Its namesake Dr Armenag Haigazian a respected educator refused to abandon his Armenian compatriots during the genocide. He tragically died in 1921. Yet his legacy lived on. His relatives the Mehagian family donated funds. They collaborated with Stephen Philibosian to establish this institution. The Armenian Missionary Association of America and the Union of Armenian Evangelical Churches in the Near East also played vital roles.

Haigazian University wasn’t solely for Lebanese Armenians. It opened its doors to all students regardless of background. This welcoming spirit contributed to its diverse student body and faculty. The university’s initial location was modest a ten-room house. It later expanded to include the impressive Mehagian Academic Center and the Mugar Building. These additions reflect the university’s growth and success.

The Lebanese Civil War tested Haigazian’s resilience. In 1987 the university temporarily relocated to the Christian Medical Center in Ashrafieh. Classes continued uninterrupted. This temporary move highlights the university’s determination to provide education despite challenging circumstances. Haigazian University returned to its renovated Kantari campus in 1997 a testament to its enduring spirit. More buildings followed including a media center and faculty offices.

Haigazian University’s impact extends beyond its impressive physical growth. It offers a wide range of programs from Bachelor’s to Master’s degrees in Arts Sciences and Business Administration. English is the primary language of instruction but some courses are offered in Armenian and Arabic. Haigazian University’s degrees are recognized by the Lebanese government and the Association of International Colleges and Universities. It’s truly a global institution.

Beyond academics Haigazian University fostered innovation. In the 1960s a group of students formed the Haigazian College Rocket Society. They designed and launched rockets achieving remarkable altitudes. Their work even garnered financial support from President Fouad Chehab. This unexpected story underscores Haigazian’s spirit of inquiry and its contributions to Lebanon’s scientific history. It also shows a unique and surprising aspect of the university.

Today Haigazian University stands as a beacon of knowledge and opportunity in Beirut. Its journey from a small college to a renowned university is a compelling narrative of perseverance and growth. It’s more than a university. It’s a living testament to the dreams of those who dared to build amidst adversity. It’s a source of pride for Lebanon and the Armenian community worldwide. Its doors remain open to all. It continues to shape generations of leaders and thinkers. It’s a place where the past inspires the future.
