Haggerston School located on Weymouth Terrace. It has a fascinating story. The architect Ernő Goldfinger designed this building. Construction took place from 1964 to 1965. Goldfinger was a celebrated modernist architect.
Originally, Haggerston School was a girls’ school. But everything changed in September 2010. It became a coeducational school. It also introduced its own sixth form.
Before this transformation, there were protests in 2006. Pupils, parents, and teachers voiced their concerns. They opposed plans to make the school mixed-sex.
A major refurbishment modernized Haggerston School in 2012. This ensured that the school could provide an updated and modern environment for students to learn in.
Ernő Goldfinger’s design is unique. He studied under Auguste Perret in Paris. Perret pioneered the aesthetic use of concrete. Goldfinger blended Perret’s influences with details from Le Corbusier. He knew both architects personally.
The school’s design incorporates the Golden Section’s mathematical proportions. The building features a double-height circulation spine with a balcony. Timber is used extensively, making it stand out in the East End. The interiors boast bush-hammered concrete and coffered ceilings.
The School House is also on the site. It was built from 1964 to 1965. Goldfinger designed it as part of the school. It shows his skill in using materials like dark brick and concrete on a domestic scale.
Haggerston School has a few notable alumni. Ivorian Doll is a rapper and internet personality. Patsy Palmer works as an actress and DJ. Maddy Hill is also an actress.
In September 2023 Haggerston School converted to academy status. The Community Schools Trust sponsors the school now. Before that, Hackney London Borough Council administered it.
The school admitted its first students around January 1966. It was then known as Haggerston Girls’ Secondary School.
The 2010-2012 refurbishment included a new creative block. Avanti Architects designed it. Dame Kelly Holmes reopened the school in 2012. She is a double Olympic gold medallist.
The plan includes three linked blocks. There is a central teaching spine with a library. The entrance block contains an assembly hall and staff area. Gymnasia are located to the east. The brutalist style features brickwork, timber, glass, and concrete.
Today, Haggerston School continues to evolve. It provides education and embraces its architectural heritage. It is a place where history and modernity meet.
