What if these walls could talk? The Hafenapotheke in Bremen stands as a testament to time. It whispers tales of a bygone era. This building is more than just bricks and mortar. It is a journey through history.

The Hafenapotheke is located in the Gröpelingen district. Specifically, it is in the Ohlenhof area on Gröpelinger Heerstraße 202. Wilhelm Blanke or Anton Busch designed it in 1907. The Bremen government recognized its cultural value in 1973. That year, it was placed under protection as a historical monument.

Heinrich Busch founded the Hafenapotheke. At that time, the street was known as Gröpelinger Chaussee. The three-story building served as both a residence and a business. The structure boasts a gabled roof. It also includes a cellar for storing medicines. Jugendstil elements are visible in the stucco ornaments. These are located between the ground floor and upper floors. The sales room was very spacious. It measured 450 square meters. The rear section features a flat roof. Some portrait reliefs remain in the stairwell. High mahogany cabinets were part of the original interior. Back then, the Hafenapotheke was the only pharmacy in the rapidly growing district.

In the early 1940s, Heinrich Busch passed the pharmacy to his nephew. His nephew was Johann Hermann Busch. In 1981, Johann Hermann Busch sold the Hafenapotheke. The buyer was the pharmacist Antje Eicker. Afterwards, she carefully modernized the interior. She also preserved many of its original features.

As of 2022, a hair salon occupies the space. The Hafenapotheke has seen many changes. Yet, it remains a significant landmark in Bremen. It is a reminder of the city’s rich past. The building stands as a bridge between eras.

Imagine the conversations that have taken place within these walls. Picture the remedies that were dispensed. Envision the people who sought solace and healing here. The Hafenapotheke has been a silent witness to the ebb and flow of life in Bremen. Its story continues. It echoes through the generations. The Hafenapotheke is more than just a building. It is a living piece of Bremen’s heritage. It is a place where history and community intertwine.
