Whispers of fire and rebirth linger in the air. Before you stands Haci Piri Cami a testament to resilience. This mosque in Istanbul’s Cihangir district has witnessed centuries of devotion and destruction. It first opened its doors in the 17th century. Sheikh Ismail Rumi a prominent figure of the Kadiri order commissioned its construction. Haci Piri Cami became the first Kadiri tekke in Istanbul a vital center for the order.

The mosque is more than just a place of worship. It served as a spiritual hub. Sufi practices were held within its walls. The building itself is a story of survival. Throughout its history Haci Piri Cami endured numerous fires. In 1764 1822 and 1894 devastating blazes ravaged the structure. Yet each time it rose again thanks to the patronage of Ottoman sultans. Sultan III Mustafa Sultan II Mahmud and Sultan II Abdulhamid oversaw restorations. A 1997 fire almost destroyed Haci Piri Cami completely. But it was rebuilt and reopened in 2019 a symbol of hope and renewal.

The inscription on the mosque details Sultan II Mahmud’s significant rebuilding efforts in 1239 AH 1823 CE. Next to the main entrance stands a beautiful cesme a fountain. Topcugasi Ismail Aga completed the cesme in 1731. Saliha Sultan mother of Sultan I Mahmud provided the water source. This cesme is known as both the Topcugasi Ismail Aga Cesmesi and the Saliha Sultan Cesmesi.
