Who was this Hacı Mehmet Efendi? We stand before the Hacı Mehmet Efendi Camii, a mosque steeped in the rich tapestry of Üsküdar’s history. Hacı Mehmet Efendi Camii isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a whisper of lives lived, a testament to faith and a reflection of Üsküdar’s ever-evolving landscape. Originally built in 1719, the Hacı Mehmet Efendi Camii, also known as Atlamataşı Camii, resided on Selâmsız Caddesi. This street intersected with Tembel Hacı Mehmet Efendi Sokağı. The mosque’s prayer hall was once a semahane, a space for Sufi whirling ceremonies. Near the qibla wall stood a mulberry tree shading the tomb of Hacı Mehmet Efendi himself. Interestingly, although said to be a follower of the Celvetî Order, his tombstone bore a 12-sliced turban, rather than the 13 slices characteristic of the Celvetî. The mosque also housed a library and a Sıbyan Mektebi, a traditional primary school. Across the road stood the Atlamataşı Han, a historical inn. Sadly, a fire consumed the Hacı Mehmet Efendi Camii sometime before 1896. The current structure, completed between 2019 and 2020, stands as a renewed testament to faith, a beacon carrying the name and spirit of Hacı Mehmet Efendi into the future. Its modern lines echo the whispers of the past, inviting us to reflect on the enduring power of community and faith in this vibrant corner of Istanbul.
