Hidden amidst the vibrant energy of Istiklal Caddesi stands the Haci Huseyin Aga Camii. It’s a sanctuary of tranquility, a small mosque often overlooked except during the Friday noon prayer. Then, the faithful, many of whom are local shopkeepers, fill the Haci Huseyin Aga Camii and spill out onto the street. This unassuming mosque holds a fascinating history. Haci Huseyin Aga Camii dates back to the late 16th century, possibly 1596. Its founder, Seyhulharem Haci Huseyin Aga, was a prominent figure of his time. He held two significant positions. He was the Sheikh-ul-Harem, responsible for the holy cities of Mecca and Medina. He was also the head of the palace educational institution, where Galatasaray Lycee stands today. The Haci Huseyin Aga Camii is unique. It was the only Muslim mosque on Istiklal Caddesi for centuries. Why Haci Huseyin Aga chose this location in what was then an undeveloped part of Istanbul, outside the city walls, remains a mystery. Perhaps he foresaw the growth of the area or recognized the need for a place of worship for the growing Muslim community. Step inside the Haci Huseyin Aga Camii and be transported back in time. Admire the beautiful Kutahya tiles, the intricate calligraphy, the colorful stained-glass windows, and the soft Isparta rugs covering the floors. In the courtyard stands a beautiful fountain. This fountain wasn’t originally part of the Haci Huseyin Aga Camii. It was brought here from the Kasimpasa Sinan Pasa Camii after its demolition. The fountain, attributed to the renowned architect Mimar Sinan, adds another layer of historical significance to this hidden gem. The Haci Huseyin Aga Camii has undergone several restorations throughout its history, most recently in 2011. These renovations ensure that its beauty and historical significance are preserved for generations to come. Even the Turkish poet Nazim Hikmet was captivated by the Haci Huseyin Aga Camii. He wrote a poem about its loneliness amidst the bustling city. Today, the Haci Huseyin Aga Camii stands as a testament to the rich history and cultural diversity of Istanbul.
