Hidden within the heart of Istanbul’s Fatih district stands the Hac1 Hamza Camii. Its unassuming exterior belies a rich history.

This mosque wasn’t built by a renowned architect like Sinan. Instead it was commissioned in 1577 by Haci Hamza. Haci Hamza was a master of debbagh a leather craftsman. While some letters attributed to Evliya Celebi suggest Mimar Sinan was the architect this claim remains unproven.

Originally its walls were constructed of rubble stone. The roof and upper sections like the prayer hall and the women’s gallery were made of wood. The mihrab the prayer niche was originally housed within a round recess.

Time and neglect took their toll. The mosque fell into disrepair. However it underwent renovations in the 19th century. Further extensive repairs were carried out in 1940 and 1987. These renovations sadly obscured much of its original character. The date 987 AH 1579 AD inscribed above the door marks Haci Hamza’s death.

Interestingly Haci Hamza’s tomb is not located within the mosque itself. You’ll find it in the Merkez Efendi Cemetery outside the walls. However the tomb of Hamza Efendi another famous scholar of the time is situated in the mosque’s graveyard right in front of the mihrab wall.

The Hac1 Hamza Camii may not be a grand spectacle. But it holds a quiet charm. It is a testament to the enduring faith and craftsmanship of a bygone era. A tangible piece of Istanbul’s intricate past. Reflect on its journey. Think of the hands that built it the prayers whispered within its walls. The Hac1 Hamza Camii quietly shares its story with those who take the time to listen.
