Can a park truly be “landlocked”? Haas Park in Chicago almost was. Haas Park honors Joseph F. Haas, a dedicated public servant. The park was established in 1928, shortly after his death. Logan Square was experiencing a residential boom. New apartments were rising beside existing graystones, gobbling up open space. Haas Park offered a much-needed green reprieve. But Haas Park, nestled in the heart of Logan Square, was small. It had a tiny basketball field, a baseball field, and a few other cramped spaces. The park was constantly busy. Logan Square had little green space. Holstein Park was over a mile away, and Humboldt Park even farther. Haas Park was the primary green space for the community. About a decade ago, the Haas Park Advisory Council realized they needed more space. They dreamt of expansion, but Haas Park was surrounded by buildings. It was truly landlocked. Their first attempt to expand east, towards a commercial corridor, was met with resistance from local businesses. The plan was eventually abandoned. A few years later, opportunity knocked. The Worldwide Distributor Building, west of the park, went up for sale. The community rallied, forming partnerships with public, private, and non-profit organizations. LISC, the Trust for Public Land, the Logan Square Neighborhood Association, and Alderman Manny Flores all contributed. With their support, the Chicago Park District purchased the building. In 2005, the warehouse was demolished. The site is now home to a LEED-certified field house. A new tot lot was added in 2007. Fairfield Avenue was closed to traffic in 2008, creating more park space. Haas Park continues to grow and evolve, offering a variety of programs. From gymnastics and volleyball to drawing and pilates, there’s something for everyone. Open gym time, pickleball, and even a tot spot are available. Haas Park is a testament to the community’s perseverance. From a “landlocked” space, it has blossomed into a vibrant hub for recreation, relaxation, and community connection.
