Here we are at H27. What untold stories lie within its walls? While its specific history remains shrouded, the streets around H27 whisper tales of a turbulent past.

Penang was once a hotbed of secret society activity. In the mid-19th century Chinese immigrants arrived. They formed groups called kongsis for mutual aid. These kongsis offered protection in a foreign land. Two major rival kongsis emerged. The Cantonese Ghee Hin and the Hokkien Tua Pek Kong established dominance.

Local Malays created their own societies. They were creatively named the Red Flags and White Flags. The Red Flags allied with Tua Pek Kong. The White Flags sided with the Ghee Hin. Places of worship strengthened these alliances. Masjid Pintal Tali linked to the White Flags. Meng Eng Soo Temple linked to the Ghee Hin. Gat Lebuh Acheh connected to the Red Flags. Khoo Kongsi tied to Tua Pek Kong.

In 1867, a riot exploded in Penang. A rambutan skin sparked the chaos. A Malay threw the skin at a Chinese man. He accused him of being a thief. The Chinese man returned with friends. A fight broke out involving stones and clubs. The Tua Pek Kong attacked the Ghee Hin. Fights erupted across Beach Street and China Street. Rioters armed themselves with sticks and knives. They set fire to houses.

The British colonial government was unprepared. Reinforcements arrived from Singapore after 10 days. The riots ended. Each secret society was fined. Leaders were sentenced or deported. Unrest continued for years.

Today, some sites of the 1867 Penang Riots have become tourist attractions. Although the 1867 Penang Riots are a thing of the distant past, the event has been immortalized via a signboard and a street mural in George Town. The Khoo Kongsi and Cannon Street are still here. They serve as reminders of this history.

Perhaps the students of H27 walk these streets every day. Hopefully, they will think about the history beneath their feet. These streets are filled with stories of conflict and resilience.
