“Lost your way?” a small voice chirped. I blinked, surprised, then looked down at a girl clutching a well-loved teddy bear. She pointed a pudgy finger towards a cheerful yellow building. “That’s Gyvelhøjskolen. My school!” Gyvelhøjskolen. The Gorse Hill School. The name itself conjured images of sunshine-yellow flowers and the joyful laughter of children. It didn’t disappoint. This wasn’t just a building; it was a hive of activity, buzzing with the energy of young minds. Gyvelhøjskolen holds a special place in the heart of Aarhus, dedicated to nurturing not just academic skills, but also the courage to dare, to try, and even to fail. Their motto, “Mod til at turde” – “Courage to Dare” – is more than just words on a wall. It’s woven into the very fabric of the school. The teachers at Gyvelhøjskolen believe in fostering a supportive community where students are encouraged to push their boundaries, embracing both their triumphs and their missteps as valuable learning experiences. This commitment to holistic development extends beyond the traditional classroom. Gyvelhøjskolen has “omlagte uger,” or restructured weeks, four times a year. During these weeks, the school day is condensed, allowing students to delve into special projects, workshops, and field trips. Imagine the possibilities. Perhaps one week is dedicated to exploring the natural wonders of Moesgård Forest, or delving into the rich Viking history of Aarhus. The office, a hub of administrative activity, is open at specific times during the week, ready to assist parents and students with their queries. Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, the office is open from 7:45 am to 11:00 am, and then again from 11:40 am to 3:00 pm. Tuesdays and Thursdays extend a bit later, closing at 4:00 pm.
