In 1967, a pivotal decision reshaped the educational landscape for the children of Wesermünde. The Landkreis Wesermünde decided to establish a Gymnasium of their own. This marked the birth of what we now know as Gymnasium Wesermünde. Located in Bremerhaven, Gymnasium Wesermünde stands as a testament to cross-border cooperation. The school’s location in Bremerhaven, while serving the Landkreis Wesermünde, reflects the intertwined history of these regions. Originally, classes began in 1969 at the Jungfischerschule. The student body quickly outgrew this space. The school then transitioned to Schiffdorf in 1971, utilizing the newly constructed Mittelpunktsonderschule building. Finally, in 1972, Gymnasium Wesermünde found its permanent home on Humboldtstraße. The story of Gymnasium Wesermünde is one of growth and adaptation. The introduction of Orientierungsstufen and the establishment of other Gymnasien led to fluctuations in student numbers. Yet, the school persevered. The abolishment of Orientierungsstufen in 2004 brought a surge in enrollment. Gymnasium Wesermünde shares its student population with the Waldschule in Hagen and Beverstedt. The school’s administration has also seen a succession of dedicated leaders, from Harro Zimmermann, the son of renowned educator Walter Zimmermann, who led the school from its inception in 1969, to Karin Elle, who took the helm in 2024. Gymnasium Wesermünde also boasts a robust academic profile. The Sekundarstufe I offers specialized programs. These include the “Forscherklasse” for math and science enthusiasts and a bilingual program emphasizing English language skills. For those seeking a broader curriculum, the Universalklasse provides a well-rounded education. Beyond academics, the Schulverein Gymnasium Wesermünde e.V., established in 1993, plays a vital role. This organization supports the school library, preserving a collection of over 15,000 books. It also contributes to the vibrant social life of the school, fostering a sense of community.
