Ever wondered about the story behind those walls? Right here stands the Gymnasium Vegesack. It is more than just a school. It is a place of history and learning. The Gymnasium Vegesack we see today came into being in 1977. It emerged from the dissolution of the Gerhard-Rohlfs-Gymnasium.

Let us step back in time to understand its origins. In 1823, a small evangelisch-unierte Kirchschule started. By 1827, it began offering Latin. This was a significant step for the two-class Volksschule. A new schoolhouse was built in 1829. It stood at the corner of Breite Strae and Oststrae. This is now known as Kirchheide.

The school gradually evolved. By 1858, it became a higher Bürgerschule. It had four to five classes. In 1869, Vegesack got its first higher school. It was called Realschule II. Ordnung. By 1882, the school was known as Realgymnasium zu Vegesack.

Around the turn of the century, student numbers grew. The Gymnasium Vegesack saw its student population increase from 140 to almost 300. In 1938, it was renamed Gerhard-Rohlfs-Schule.

After World War II, the school reopened in 1946. It continued as the Gerhard-Rohlfs-Schule. By 1957, it became the Gerhard-Rohlfs-Gymnasium. That year, it introduced coeducation. Boys and girls began learning together.

Student numbers kept rising. By 1967, over 1100 students attended. Space became a problem. To ease the situation, the Gymnasium Blumenthal was established in 1967.

In 1976 and 1977, school reforms led to a split. The Gerhard-Rohlfs-Gymnasium was divided. One part became the Gerhard-Rohlfs-Schulzentrum. The other part was the Schulzentrum des Sekundarbereichs II.

In 1993, another split occurred. The Gymnasium Vegesack became its own entity. Since 1998, the Gymnasium Vegesack has developed a profile for its upper school level. This allowed for interdisciplinary teaching.

The Gymnasium Vegesack offers much more. It has a Schulverein which has existed since 1995. The school encourages participation in competitions. These include language, sports, and mathematics. There are computer workstations for everyone. A cafeteria and a Mensa provide food. School trips are regularly organized. The school also fosters international exchanges. These include trips to Alaska and Mallorca.

Today, the Gymnasium Vegesack stands on a campus. It consists of five buildings. These are the Altbau, Neubau, Dependance, Förderzentrum, and Sporthalle. It has around 900 students. About 140 teachers work here.

The Gymnasium Vegesack has produced notable alumni. Jan Böhmermann who is a well-known radio and television host, attended the school. Wiebke Winter, a German politician, is also an alumna.

The Gymnasium Vegesack continues to evolve. It adapts to meet the needs of its students. It prepares them for the challenges of the future. It stands as a testament to the power of education. The Gymnasium Vegesack looks forward to shaping many more futures.
