A hush fell over the crowd as the doors to Gymnasium München/Moosach swung open. You might be surprised to learn that this school started its life in a rather unusual place. In 1973, Gymnasium München/Moosach began its journey on the top floor of a furniture store. Can you imagine having your physics lessons surrounded by discount sofas? The furniture store, located on Allacher Straße, served as a temporary home for the burgeoning student body. It quickly became clear that they needed a proper school building. The student population exploded in those early years. By Christmas 1975, the school was so crowded that they had to hold their holiday celebrations in four separate shifts. Finally, in 1976, the brand new school building, which we stand before now, was ready. The official inauguration took place a year later with important figures like the German Federal Minister Hans-Jochen Vogel in attendance. Gymnasium München/Moosach quickly became an integral part of the community. Today it boasts impressive facilities including its own swimming pool and even a climbing wall. As you continue your exploration of Munich, remember the unconventional beginnings of this school. It’s a testament to the fact that sometimes even furniture stores can be fertile ground for education.
