It was originally known as the “Gymnasium of Germany,” and its impressive metal framework, salvaged from the 1878 World Exposition’s grand Machine Gallery, is a powerful reminder of the ingenuity of Parisian engineers. In 1913, a more imposing structure, a collection of buildings surrounding the original metal hall, was added by the architect Charles Gautier, culminating in the imposing edifice that remains today. It’s hard to believe now, but the Gymnase was once even more than just a training ground. It also housed a meeting room and a public bathhouse. The bathhouse closed in 1997, but the spirit of the Gymnase Jean Jaurès has endured. The gym is now a hub of activity, hosting a variety of disciplines like boxing, capoeira and aikido.
