In the late 1980s, the vision of a new district shopping center for West Edinburgh began to take shape. It wasn’t easy. The journey from an idea to a thriving commercial center involved public inquiries and negotiations with authorities who sought to protect nearby retail areas. The name “Maybury Park” was initially chosen, but this was ultimately abandoned in favor of “The Gyle.”
Construction began in 1992. In October 1993, the shopping center opened its doors, marking the beginning of a significant evolution for the area.
Over the years, The Gyle has expanded, with new stores, restaurants, and even a food court. It became a place where people gather to shop, socialize, and enjoy the convenience of having a variety of options under one roof.
There was even an ambitious plan for a cinema in 2019. The plan was to move the bus stance away from the front of the center and create a new local town center. But the city council rejected the plan because of concerns over public transport and cycling.
Today, The Gyle is an integral part of Edinburgh’s retail landscape, a testament to the dynamic growth of the city.
