Hidden within the sprawling metropolis of Istanbul, the Güzelyurt Aqueduct whispers tales of a bygone era. It stands as a testament to the ingenuity of Ottoman engineering and the ambition of a powerful sultan. The Güzelyurt Aqueduct, also known as the Gözlüce Aqueduct, isn’t as famous as the Valens Aqueduct. But it holds its own unique charm. The Güzelyurt Aqueduct was part of a grand vision. Sultan Süleyman the Magnificent, recognizing the growing city’s thirst, commissioned a vast water supply system. This system, known as the Kırkçeşme Water Supply System, stretched for 55 kilometers, incorporating dozens of aqueducts and four dams. The Güzelyurt Aqueduct played a crucial role in this network. Designed by the legendary architect Mimar Sinan, the aqueduct brought water from the Belgrade Forest to quench the city’s thirst. Construction began in 1554, finalized in 1564. This two-tiered marvel of engineering spans 155 meters. Its lower level boasts eight arches, while the upper level has eleven. The walls, built with sturdy cut stone, measure a remarkable 5.4 meters thick at the base. The Güzelyurt Aqueduct has faced its share of challenges. In 1563, a significant flood separated the aqueduct from its foundation. Remarkably, it didn’t collapse. This resilience speaks to Sinan’s masterful construction. Today, the aqueduct stands proudly within the Alibeyköy Dam basin. For those seeking a closer look, the summer months offer the best opportunity. The receding dam waters reveal the aqueduct’s full grandeur. Despite its age and the surrounding development, the Güzelyurt Aqueduct retains its 16th-century architectural features. Its remote location within the dam basin has shielded it from significant damage. This hidden gem, also known as the Karga Duct by locals, remains a testament to a time when water flowed freely through the city’s veins.
