Gutshaus Schloss Pötenitz. A name whispered on the Baltic breeze, a story etched in stone and timber. Here, at the edge of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, where the Trave River curves into the Lübeck Bay, stands this grand estate, a silent witness to centuries of change. Gutshaus Schloss Pötenitz isn’t just a building; it’s a tapestry woven with threads of ambition, artistry, and resilience. The original structure, built in 1838-39, reflects the popular neo-Gothic style of the time, possibly designed by the renowned Wismar architect Heinrich Thormann, the same mind behind the striking Gutshaus Alt Vorwerk. Imagine the bustling activity as the estate took shape, the clang of hammers and the scrape of trowels shaping the very stones we see today. The Eckermann family, owners since 1786, oversaw this initial construction, laying the foundation for the grandeur to come. In 1902, Gutshaus Schloss Pötenitz embarked on a new chapter under the ownership of Rittmeister Anton von Brocken. Between 1911 and 1913, he commissioned a significant transformation, hiring the esteemed architect Paul Korff. Korff, known for his distinctive touch on numerous estates across Mecklenburg and Pomerania, blended neo-Baroque elements into the existing structure, creating the striking silhouette we admire today. Picture the estate during this period of rebirth, an elegant east wing rising, its hipped roof a testament to Korff’s vision. A rounded tower, capped with a bell-shaped roof, gracefully bridges the original neo-Gothic core and the new addition. The central section, with its three prominent axes, gained a dramatic entrance, an altar-like porch supported by Doric columns and accessed by a sweeping staircase. Above, a magnificent, volute-shaped gable, adorned with the family’s coat of arms flanked by decorative cornucopias, crowns the facade. Even the original octagonal corner tower was reimagined, now topped with a charming bell roof. The von Brocken family held the estate until 1945, their lives intertwined with the fate of Gutshaus Schloss Pötenitz. After a period of uncertainty and change, the estate fell into disrepair, becoming an “Investruine” – a ruin awaiting investment – by 1999. Now, over 190 years after its initial construction, Gutshaus Schloss Pötenitz is poised for another transformation. As we stand here, we can almost feel the echoes of its past, the whispers of architects and families who shaped its destiny. This is more than just a building; it’s a living story waiting to be continued.
