In 1932, the Gustav-Adolf-Kirche first opened its doors. It stands as a testament to community spirit and perseverance. The Gustav-Adolf-Kirche wasn’t built overnight. The need for a Protestant church in Mainz-Amöneburg grew with the influx of people during the industrialization. Starting in the 1890s, the community began fundraising. A temporary solution was found when the company Dyckerhoff & Söhne offered their canteen for Sunday services. By 1914, they had collected a substantial amount, but unfortunately, much of it was lost. Undeterred, they continued their efforts. With renewed determination, the community rallied again. By 1928, they had amassed more funds and secured the support of the Gustav-Adolf-Werk, a vital partner in their mission. This allowed them to lay the foundation stone in 1931. Less than a year later, the Gustav-Adolf-Kirche was inaugurated. The Gustav-Adolf-Kirche is named after the Swedish King Gustav II Adolf. He was known as a champion of Protestant interests during the Thirty Years’ War. The design of the Gustav-Adolf-Kirche reflects the architectural style of Brick Expressionism. The church’s interior boasts a unique three-aisled layout. The dark, flat wooden ceiling is not just aesthetically pleasing. It also contributes to the church’s excellent acoustics. Outside, two freestanding columns frame the portal of the Gustav-Adolf-Kirche. These columns are topped with ornaments. The ornaments are reminiscent of decorated Torah scrolls. The church’s exterior facing Melanchtonstrasse is adorned with brick ornaments. An inscription reads “GOTT = UNSERE HILFE GUSTAV ADOLF zum Gedä chtnis” along with the years 1632, 1832, and 1932. These dates commemorate the death of Gustav II Adolf, the founding of the Gustav-Adolf-Werk, and the year the church was dedicated. The apse of the Gustav-Adolf-Kirche features a golden cross. The vault bears the circular inscription “FRIEDE SEI MIT EUCH” (Peace be with you). The church’s original bells were likely lost. New bells were cast and installed in 1958, each carrying a unique inscription. While World War II largely spared the church, the organ suffered water damage. It has since been restored to its former glory. The Gustav-Adolf-Kirche continues to serve its community. In 2017, it merged with the neighboring Oranier-Gedächtniskirche to form the Oranier-Gedächtnisgemeinde.
