Let’s delve into the history of this remarkable place. The Gusaling Perez-Samanillo Building was built in 1928. It was commissioned by Don Luis Perez Samanillo. He was a Spanish businessman with ties to the Hotel de Oriente. The architect was none other than Andres Luna de San Pedro. He was the son of the famous painter Juan Luna.
Back then Escolta Street was Manila’s financial hub. The Gusaling Perez-Samanillo Building quickly became a landmark. In fact it was the tallest building in Manila at the time. Its Art Deco design made it stand out. The building’s geometric patterns are striking. Look for the boomerang-like chevrons and lancet arches. These details won the building the best decor award in 1928.
The Gusaling Perez-Samanillo Building has seen its share of drama. Don Luis Perez Samanillo tragically died in the Spanish Civil War. His son later became a victim of World War II. The building itself suffered damage during the war. But it was later repaired and restored.
In 1968 the First United Building Corporation acquired the building. Over the years the Gusaling Perez-Samanillo Building has housed various tenants. These included the consulates of France and Panama.
The Gusaling Perez-Samanillo Building also became a hub for the film industry. Prominent artists like Dolphy and Nora Aunor had offices here. Film production companies flocked to the building. This was due to its proximity to movie theaters.
Today the First United Building is a vibrant space. It houses the HUB Make Lab. This is a collection of local shops selling arts and vintage goods. There is even a museum here. It preserves the history of Escolta. You can also find a coworking space. The HUB occupies the space once held by Berg’s Department Store. Chinese businessman Sy Lian Teng later managed Berg’s. His descendants now own the entire building.
