High above the Walgau valley stands Gurtisspitze. A simple summit cross marks its peak. From here the panorama is breathtaking. The Bodensee shimmers in the distance. The Rheintal valley stretches out below.

Gurtisspitze is a 1778-meter high mountain. It’s part of the Rhaetikon mountain range. More specifically it belongs to the Galina group. The mountain is easily recognizable. Its summit is largely vegetation-free. This offers exceptional panoramic views. Below the peak dense grass covers the slopes. Some shrubs and fir trees grow there.

Two small streams originate near Gurtisspitze. One is the Gavadurabach. It flows into the Samina river. The other unnamed stream flows into the Galina river. Both are short but swift.

Nearby peaks include the Zu00e4washeilspitze also known as Wisle. It’s just a short distance away. Further along the ridge are the Spitzu00e4lispitz and Goppaschrofen. The Hohen Ku00f6pfe are a bit further. They are significantly higher.

Hikers frequently visit Gurtisspitze. The trails are relatively well-maintained. A popular route starts from Gurtis. It goes via the Bazora-Alpe. This hike takes four to five hours. A longer more challenging tour includes other peaks. This tour takes eight to twelve hours. This one is for experienced hikers only. Trittsicherheit and Schwindelfreiheit are essential. Good footwear is a must.

Gurtisspitze offers a magnificent view. It’s a rewarding destination for those who enjoy a challenging hike. The rewarding feeling at the top is worth the effort.
