Beyond the bustling city lies a tranquil escape Gurney Bay Phase 1. It is a seafront park that offers a refreshing contrast to urban life. Gurney Bay Phase 1 opened to the public in 2024. It represents the initial stage of Penang’s new iconic waterfront destination.

Originally the land reclamation was intended for residential development. The Penang state government proposed transforming a portion of it into a public park. Eastern & Oriental Berhad surrendered 131 acres of reclaimed land to the government. This shows their commitment to creating a space for the community.

Notably the landscaping expenses for Gurney Bay Phase 1 were covered by the Penang state government. The reclamation method used was sand filling and soil treatment. This is similar to techniques used for major projects like Hong Kong Disneyland.

In 2023 Gurney Wharf was renamed Gurney Bay. This renaming reflects the project’s concept. Phase 1 focuses on recreational components. These include a beach coastal grove and water gardens.

The artificial beach at Gurney Bay Phase 1 extends the Gurney Drive coast by 400 meters. The water gardens section draws inspiration from Singapore’s Gardens by the Bay. It uses an innovative water filtration system.

The groundbreaking for Phase 1 occurred in May 2022. Construction took one year and seven months. Gurney Bay Phase 1 now features a seafront promenade. It has a playground a skate park kiosks and open-air car parks. Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said 1500 trees and 10000 shrubs have been planted.

Phase 2 is scheduled for completion in 2025. It will include retail outlets dining facilities and a pier walk. The famous Gurney Drive Hawker Centre will be relocated here. In December 2019 the reclamation of Phase 2 was completed.

Currently Phase 2 is 40 percent complete. Upon completion Gurney Bay will offer a total of 800 car parks 12 bus lots and 238 motorcycle lots. The park component for both phases covers about 40 acres.

The creation of Gurney Bay represents a significant investment. RM221 million was spent to built on reclaimed land. This is a testament to Penang’s commitment to providing quality public spaces.

As you stroll along the promenade imagine the vision behind Gurney Bay. It is a space for recreation relaxation and community engagement. The blend of natural elements and modern amenities creates a unique experience.

Gurney Bay stands as a symbol of Penang’s progress. It is a place where residents and visitors can gather. Here they can enjoy the beauty of the coastline and the vibrancy of the city.
