Haven’t you noticed the two-pillared building at the end of Harley Grove? This is the Gurdwara Sikh Sangat. It stands as a testament to Bow’s diverse religious history. The Gurdwara Sikh Sangat welcomes all people to worship. It does not matter your caste, color, or creed.

The story of Gurdwara Sikh Sangat is quite remarkable. It reflects the changing face of London’s East End. The building has undergone three major religious transformations. It is a microcosm of the lives of those who have walked through its history.

Originally, it was built as a congregational chapel in 1854. Back then, the street was known as Harley Street. For many years, it served the local Christian community.

In 1927, the building was converted into a synagogue. It became the Mile End and Bow District Synagogue. This change reflected the growing Jewish population in Bow. The synagogue became a sanctuary. It offered support to struggling families and Jewish migrants. Rabbi Israel Joseph Lew led the services until his retirement in 1950.

By 1977, another shift occurred. The synagogue transitioned into the Gurdwara Sikh Sangat. This change mirrored the increasing number of Sikhs moving to East London. Many came from India in search of a better life. Others were expelled from Kenya and Uganda.

Tragedy struck in 2009. An arson attack destroyed 75% of the Gurdwara Sikh Sangat. The Sikh community mourned this act of disrespect and hatred. Several Guru Granth Sahib Ji’s were lost in the fire.

Despite the devastation, the community persevered. They showed their faith would not be beaten. With donations and countless hours of work, the Gurdwara Sikh Sangat reopened in June 2013. Up to 2000 worshipers took part in a procession. They walked through Mile End, Stepney Green, and Bethnal Green. They handed out food to local people.

Today, the Gurdwara Sikh Sangat stands as a symbol of resilience. It is a testament to the strength and unity of the Sikh community. It offers food and shelter to those in need. The Gurdwara has two Darbar Sahibs. The main Darbar Sahib can accommodate large crowds. Diwan Hall Baba Buda Sahib Ji is used for additional services. The Gurdwara Sikh Sangat also has two langar halls, a library, and a lift for the elderly.

The Gurdwara Sikh Sangat’s story is one of faith and community. It reflects the ever-changing tapestry of London’s East End. Remember the Gurdwara Sikh Sangat’s history as a beacon of hope and inclusivity.
