From humble beginnings to a beacon of faith, the Gurdwara Sri Kalgidhar Sahib in Takanini stands as a testament to the Sikh community’s devotion. The Gurdwara Sahib’s story began over eight years before its inauguration in 2005. The Sikh community in Otahuhu realized their existing Gurdwara was becoming too small. They dreamt of a larger, more spacious place for worship and gatherings. This dream became a reality with the purchase of 3.5 hectares of land on Takanini School Road. The former Maori Club occupied the land. A community member purchased it and then sold it to the Sikh Society for the original price. The Gurdwara Sahib complex cost NZ$6.5 million. It was officially opened on March 13, 2005, by then Prime Minister Helen Clark. Over 20,000 people attended the inauguration festivities. The celebrations included prayers, speeches, and Kabaddi. Prime Minister Clark acknowledged the Sikh community’s contributions to New Zealand’s rich culture and heritage. The Gurdwara Sahib is a unique structure. The main complex houses two large halls on two levels. The ground floor has a massive kitchen, spanning over 220 square meters. It’s been described as possibly the largest kitchen in the world. This kitchen features state-of-the-art equipment. This includes freezers, ovens, and numerous utensils imported from India. The main gates, the Khalsa, and the domes atop the temple were also brought from India. The Gurdwara Sahib boasts a 90-foot flagpole displaying the Sikh religious flag. The second floor houses the prayer hall, where the sacred Guru Granth Sahib is kept. There are also rooms for relaxation. The third level holds a museum with rare photographs and artifacts. A separate building houses a library, meeting rooms, and other facilities. The Gurdwara Sahib is known for its open and welcoming atmosphere. It embraces people of all faiths and backgrounds. The Sikh community’s generosity extends beyond the Gurdwara’s walls. They regularly provide food for other temples, families in need, and the homeless. They even plan to use food trucks to bring meals into the city.
