Stepping into the world of culinary excellence, we find ourselves at the Gundel Restaurant. Have you ever wondered what secrets lie behind these elegant walls? The Gundel Restaurant, nestled in Budapest’s City Park, has a rich history dating back to 1894. It began as the Wampetich Restaurant, a popular spot for artists, writers, and politicians. Károly Gundel took the reins in 1910, transforming it into a culinary icon. Gundel, a master of hospitality, believed in treating every customer like a cherished guest. His philosophy? “High turnover – small profit.” He focused on quality ingredients, impeccable service, and an abundance of choices. This approach made the Gundel Restaurant a beloved destination for everyone, from park-goers enjoying a simple pretzel to the elite attending lavish banquets. The Gundel was even chosen to host a state banquet for King Victor Emmanuel III of Italy in 1937. The restaurant’s fame extended beyond Hungary’s borders. In 1939, Károly Gundel oversaw the Hungarian pavilion at the New York World’s Fair, introducing Hungarian cuisine to the world. The New York Times declared the Gundel Restaurant a better advertisement for Budapest than any tourist brochure. Gundel’s culinary legacy includes iconic dishes like Újházi chicken soup, Jókai bean soup, and of course, the Gundel pancake. Originally a family recipe of writer Sándor Márai’s wife, the pancake, filled with walnuts, raisins, and candied orange peel, was perfected by Ferenc and Imre Gundel. From simple pretzels on the terrace to gourmet meals in the grand dining room, the Gundel offered something for everyone. It has hosted royalty, celebrities, and everyday people, all united by their appreciation for exceptional food and warm hospitality. Even after nationalization in 1949 and a period of slumber, the Gundel has been revived, continuing to charm guests with its timeless elegance and culinary excellence.
