Envision grass hills. These hills define Guldbergs Plads. Here in Nørrebro, Copenhagen, Guldbergs Plads underwent much-needed urban regeneration. The goal? Revitalize this public space for everyone.

Many needs were considered. Challenges were negotiated. The landscape architects developed one clear concept. Hills, trees, and poles create a multifunctional space.

Pre-existing activities were not erased. They blend with new layers. Urban exercise and play for all ages meet enhanced city nature. Wild flowering meadows meet a forest of larch trees. This benefits the local area and the city.

User involvement shaped the regeneration of Guldbergs Plads. Residents suggested ideas for the blue poles. They transformed from an outdoor gym. Now it is a playground for adults. This attracts new users beyond traditional gym-goers.

Ten grass hills define the space. Seventy-five larch trees stand tall. Two hundred blue poles complete Guldbergs Plads. It is a neighborhood park in central Nørrebro. People of all ages meet here. They exercise and relax together.

These three elements create coherence. They unite existing functions with new programs. These programs define the square’s new identity. It is an activity park. It focuses on exercise in the public city space.

The varying sizes of the grass hills create a playful landscape. High meadow grass spans the hills. This creates a visual layer in the park. Larch trees and blue metal poles scatter across the green. They form a new urban forest.

The larch trees change with the seasons. Bright green in spring turns yellow in fall. Long silhouettes flicker in winter. They give users a sense of nature in Nørrebro.

The 200 blue poles set the stage for new activities at Guldbergs Plads. Local residents influenced the design. Activity spots and equipment attract adults. These adults are not accustomed to exercise.

Six big swings stand side by side. A 3D climbing labyrinth sits atop a rubber hill. A gathering of beams reaches different heights. A grove of gymnastic rings offers challenges. Marked routes wind around the park. Extra poles offer endless possibilities. They can be used spontaneously or for organized activities.

Originally, Guldbergsgade was Barkmøllevej. It got its current name in 1959. The name honors Frederik Høegh-Guldberg. He built a house on the street. He taught at Blaagaard Seminarium.

Spaces near Guldberg School were refurbished from 2006 to 2011. The area behind the school is now Guldberg Byplads.

In 2015, 1:1 Landskab refurbished Guldbergs Plads. It now features a landscaped playground. Installations promote physical activity. A pole forest on a small hill is a distinctive feature. All installations share the same blue color. This lends a sense of place to the public space. It was once deserted.

So take a moment to enjoy the revitalized Guldbergs Plads. Notice how landscape architecture brings people together. Note how the space encourages activity and relaxation in the heart of Nørrebro.
