“Did you know this bridge was once called the Viktoriabrücke?” I ask. The Guido-Westerwelle-Brücke stands before us a testament to Bonn’s history. For over a century it connected the city’s north and west sides. It gracefully spans the railway lines a vital artery for Bonn’s transport system.

Before its current name it was known as the Viktoriabrücke named after Empress Victoria. This name reflected its long history dating back to 1905. That year the first bridge opened its spans to traffic. It was a significant achievement a non-level crossing over the busy Cologne-Koblenz railway line. It was a steel girder bridge a sophisticated piece of engineering for its time.

The original Viktoriabrücke wasn’t just a bridge it was a muse. The renowned artist August Macke who lived nearby captured its image in 22 of his works. Imagine the bridge in his paintings vibrant colours capturing the essence of early 20th century Bonn. Sadly the original bridge met its end during World War II. Allied bombers severely damaged it during a nighttime raid on December 28 1944. The bridge collapsed a tragic loss for the city.

After the war the city rebuilt it. This time it was a larger sturdier bridge opened on December 22 1949. It took only five months to construct an impressive feat involving 80 workers and 40 prisoners. In the 1960s it underwent further expansion. A 6.5 metre widening on the west side improved its capacity.

The Guido-Westerwelle-Brücke is more than just a means of transportation. In 2006 around 34000 cars crossed it daily. But age and heavy use took their toll. Significant structural damage forced its near-total reconstruction. This major project a multi-million Euro undertaking spanned several years. Completed in 2022 it now boasts improved infrastructure for cars cyclists and pedestrians.

The bridge’s renaming in April 2024 honours Guido Westerwelle. A prominent Bonn native and German politician. He grew up near this very bridge. His connection to Bonn and its landmarks is deeply ingrained in its fabric. The Guido-Westerwelle-Brücke now stands as a symbol of connection. A connection between past and present a connection between people and places. This isn’t just a bridge it’s a living history book a tangible part of Bonn’s story.
