Around 250 BC, a Celtic tribe known as the Parisii settled along the Seine. Here, before you stands the Guerrier Celte. This statue commemorates their presence and a local archaeological discovery. The Parisii built a fortress in Nanterre and a military post on the Île de la Cité. This island was the easiest place to cross the river. The Guerrier Celte reminds us of their strategic importance. They built bridges and controlled major trading routes, charging travelers for passage. The name “Parisii” possibly comes from the Celtic word for “kettle,” suggesting they were the “people of the kettle.” The Romans, led by Julius Caesar, invaded Gaul in 57 BC. The Parisii joined other Gallic tribes, led by Vercingetorix, to resist. The Battle of Lutetia took place near the current Champ de Mars. The Romans won and the city fell under Roman rule. A new settlement was built and called Lutetia, meaning “swamp of the Parisii.” This occurred on the very island the Parisii had controlled. The Guerrier Celte stands as a silent witness to this tumultuous history. The statue evokes the spirit of the Parisii, their strategic brilliance, and the enduring legacy they left on the city that bears their name. They may have been conquered, but their memory lives on, symbolized by the Guerrier Celte.
