Lost in thought? Imagine being perched atop Hármashatár Hill. Below us stands the Guckler Károly-kilátópont. It is an octagonal tower made of steel and pine. The Guckler Károly-kilátópont offers a perfect vantage point.

This lookout is named after Károly Guckler. He was a prominent figure in the Buda hills. Guckler was chief forester of the capital. Later, he became head of the Forestry Office.

The Guckler Károly-kilátópont’s story begins in the 19th century. Forests were disappearing due to the demand for firewood. Hármashatár Hill was spectacularly cleared. Public outcry led to change. The National Forestry Association declared the destruction unsustainable in 1885.

Károly Guckler was inspired. In 1895, he became chief forester. He planted young oaks. This created better-quality forests. He faced resistance but persevered.

Guckler reforested Hármashatár Hill. He followed the Viennese pattern. He planted sturdy black pines. These improved the soil. Later, the Pilis Park Forestry team replaced them with native trees.

The Guckler Károly-kilátópont was built between 2015 and 2016. It was constructed by Pilisi Parkerdő Zrt. Koller József, an Ybl Prize-winning architect, designed it. The official opening was on July 14, 2016.

The lookout reuses old World War II air defense positions. Its base is an octagon. The reinforced concrete level is 4 meters high. The complex wooden structure used 40 cubic meters of layered glued pine beams. It used almost 4.5 tons of steel.

From the Guckler Károly-kilátópont, a panorama unfolds. You can see the Buda Hills. Northward, the Vác-Pest Danube Valley stretches out. Southward is the Pest alluvial cone plain. The Gödöllő Hills border it to the northeast.

North, the Pilis and Visegrád Mountains rise beyond the Solymár Valley. To the south, the deep valley of the Ördög-árok is visible. The Nagy-Hárs-hegy, János-hegy, and Széchenyi-hegy line up. Westward, the Pesthidegkút Basin appears behind Nagy-Hárs-hegy. On clear days, the Mátra and High Tatra peaks can be seen.

Today, the Guckler Károly-kilátópont is on the National Blue Trail. Nearby, you can find the Hármashatár Hill Excursion Center. There is also the Forest Gift Forest School and the Hangár Bistro. The new Hármashatár Hill Tourist House offers 50 beds.

The Guckler Károly-kilátópont serves as a reminder. It honors a man who helped restore these hills. Guckler’s work ensures we can enjoy this view today. Take a moment to appreciate the beauty around you. Think of the man who made it possible: Károly Guckler.
