High above Yuanjin Temple rises the Guanyin Pagoda. What stories do its walls hold? The Guanyin Pagoda is located inside Yuanjin Temple in Zhujiajiao Town, Qingpu District, Shanghai.

Let’s explore the story of Guanyin. Guanyin is the bodhisattva of compassion. The Donglin Temple in Shanghai is dedicated to Guanyin. Donglin Temple was constructed during the Yuan Dynasty in 1308. It has been destroyed and rebuilt many times because of war, fire, and neglect. The temple was completely redesigned between 2004 and 2007. As of 2010, the temple occupies a 20-hectare site.

The Hall of Guanyin is the main building of the Donglin Temple. The hall’s exterior mimics a large red natural cliff. The entrance gate is about 20 meters high and 10 meters wide. The bronze doors are decorated with 999 relief images of Buddha. The hall is 31 meters wide, 42 meters deep, and 31 meters high. It houses a gilded statue of the thousand-armed Guanyin. The statue is 27 meters tall and stands on a 2-meter-high lotus base. Its arms are up to 5 meters in length.

Guanyin is primarily considered female at Putuoshan. Putuoshan Island is off the coast of Shanghai. It is one of the four sacred Buddhist mountains in China. Each mountain is dedicated to a particular Bodhisattva. Putuoshan is dedicated to Guanyin, the goddess of compassion. Legend says that Guanyin was transformed through her exceptional sacrifices. She is tied to the Chinese folk legend of Miaoshan, a young woman.

The Guanyin Pagoda watches over this fascinating area. It is a beacon of hope and compassion. As you stand here, consider the rich history. Think about the enduring power of faith that surrounds you. The Guanyin Pagoda is a testament to devotion. It invites reflection and offers solace to all who seek it.
