How about a story that starts long before this building even existed? Once upon a time, there was Kong Yiong High School. It stood proudly in Yio Chu Kang. But by 1986, Kong Yiong High School faced a sharp drop in enrollment. It had to close.
Now, fast forward to 1987. This is when Guangyang Secondary School was born. The School Advisory Committee of Kong Yiong High School generously donated about $60000. The money was for a school that would adopt its name. While setting up this new school in Bishan, they chose “Guangyang”. It is the Hanyu Pinyin equivalent of “Kong Yiong”.
In its early days, Guangyang Secondary School shared space with Zhonghua Secondary School. Imagine students from two schools learning under one roof. In 1990, Guangyang Secondary School finally got its own building. It cost $7 million.
Guangyang Secondary School had 28 classrooms. It also included a library and an audio-visual theatrette. Six science laboratories enabled hands-on learning. There were also two home economics rooms. Four computer labs were part of the plan. An IT-enabled resource room supported digital literacy. Two technical workshops supported vocational skills.
Outside, Guangyang Secondary School students enjoyed a football field. A basketball court and a volleyball court were also there. Eventually, the volleyball court became a street soccer court. An indoor sports hall was shared with Guangyang Primary School.
Guangyang Secondary School has seen several principals guide its path. Leong Khin See was the first. Alice Tan Lee Huan took over in 1993. Ng-Ong Phiak Kim became principal in 1996. Ngiam Geak Kim ushered in the new year 2001. Low Chee Moon became the fifth principal in 2002.
Guangyang Secondary School even earned the distinction of being a Top Value-Added School. In 2003, an important announcement came. Guangyang Secondary School and Braddell-Westlake Secondary School would merge. The merger happened in 2006. Guangyang Secondary School’s name was kept.
Before the merger, students from both schools created a ceramic mural wall. This symbolized their collaboration. It was installed in the merged school in 2005.
Tan Miao Ling became the sixth principal in 2006. Benjamin Kwok took office in December 2012. Alvin Lim became the eighth principal in December 2017.
Today, Guangyang Secondary School continues its mission. It strives to provide a holistic education. Its motto? “Strong in Principles, Steadfast in Duty.” This reflects the school’s commitment to character development. Guangyang Secondary School shapes future leaders. It prepares students for a changing world.
