In 1695, Elector Johann Wilhelm appointed Grupello as his court sculptor. Grupello moved to Düsseldorf. He created sculptures of the royal couple. Grupello also designed a fountain for the Galerieplatz in Düsseldorf. This is now in Mannheim.

The Grupello pyramid was originally created in 1714/1715. Gabriel de Grupello originally made it for the Galerieplatz in Düsseldorf. In 1743, it was moved to Mannheim. Alessandro Galli da Bibiena added a new base. Paul Egell was supposed to create eight fountain bowls with figures. Johannes Hoffart expanded it into a fountain system between 1888 and 1893.

Grupello’s style evolved over time. His early work showed classicist tendencies. Later, it embraced the Flemish Baroque style. Peter Paul Rubens influenced him. This style is evident in the marble wall fountain he created in Brussels.

The Grupello-Brunnen embodies the spirit of Karlsruhe. It reflects the city’s rich history and artistic heritage. Karlsruhe is renowned for its architectural prowess. Buildings were designed by famous architects such as Friedrich Weinbrenner.
