Twelve million Marks. That’s how much the Gr\u00fcnwinkler Br\u00fccke cost. Can you imagine?
Before us stands the Gr\u00fcnwinkler Br\u00fccke a vital artery connecting the city. It wasn’t always here. This impressive structure replaced a dangerous level crossing. A crossing that tragically claimed five lives in a 1971 accident. That accident spurred the construction of this bridge. Construction began after years of planning and studies that started way back in 1931. The initial studies were focused on improving the crossing of the Maxaubahn and G\u00fcterbahn railway lines. The Lokalbahn once crossed these lines adding complexity to the intersection.
The Gr\u00fcnwinkler Br\u00fccke wasn’t just a quick fix. Its construction was a joint effort. The Federal Railway the Federal Highway Administration and the city of Karlsruhe each shared the cost. The result is a 280-meter-long bridge boasting two impressive road ramps each approximately 230 meters long. But the Gr\u00fcnwinkler Br\u00fccke is more than just roads. It also includes pedestrian access with three staircases. These stairs lead to Benzstrasse the platforms of Karlsruhe West station and a steeper ramp connects to Hardeckstrasse.
In 2014 the Gr\u00fcnwinkler Br\u00fccke underwent a major renovation. This 1.5 million Euro project revitalized the bridge. The railings were replaced and the staircases reinforced. The road surface was also renewed. The renovation required closures. Half of the bridge was closed to city-bound traffic from February 17 to April 21 2014. Then the entire bridge shut down completely from April 22 to June 30 2014.
