How about a green escape right in the city? That is the Grüne Bogen Paunsdorf. This expansive landscape is a remarkable project. It transformed the northeast of Leipzig. This green space spans 120 hectares. It significantly improves the living environment for about 17000 residents.
The Grüne Bogen Paunsdorf arose from agricultural and military fallow land. It surrounds the Heiterblick housing estate. It slowly became a high-quality recreational area. This happened alongside model nature conservation strategies.
Planning started in 1999. From the beginning citizen participation was key. The Bürgerverein Paunsdorf was involved. Public forums workshops and exhibitions took place. Residents actively contributed to the project. They participated in planting campaigns and tree sponsorships. In 2013 a review helped shape further development based on needs.
The Grüne Bogen Paunsdorf has received international recognition. It was nominated for the International Urban Landscape Award in 2007. In the same year it won the Leipzig Architecture Prize. It also received a special prize Nature in the City. This was part of the Biodiversity Capital competition in 2011.
A key part of the Grüne Bogen Paunsdorf is a grazing project. It started in 2004 on the former military area of the Heiterblick barracks. This 35-hectare area is unique in Leipzig. It is a habitat for rare animals. These include moor frogs great crested newts dragonflies and various bird species. Water buffalo and wild horses maintain the open land. They prevent the spread of trees. They suppress invasive plants like Canadian goldenrod. Open water areas and grassland thrive due to the grazing. Scientific studies confirm this positive development. The grazing area has a public circular path. An observation terrace built in 2004 offers views of the landscape. It is a place to watch the flora and fauna. Here wilderness and city meet.
Nearby is the 10-hectare Bürgerpark. This park has been under development since 2001. It includes extensive tree planting. It also includes the construction of a promenade. There are play and leisure facilities for children and teenagers. In 2006 Amazon established a site here. This offered a unique chance. Rainwater disposal was needed for the adjacent industrial area. This was combined with the development of the Grüne Bogen Paunsdorf. This created an exemplary natural drainage solution. It aligns with the Paunsdorfer Wäldchen-Heiterblick landscape protection area.
The Bürgerpark’s centerpiece is a large landscape lake. It is about 1.4 hectares in size and almost 400 meters long. It is also about 2 meters deep. It serves as a natural rainwater retention system. It is an attraction for local recreation. It can also be used for angling in the future. A fountain ensures water quality. It has a cleaning ditch for water circulation. A drainage pipe connects the lake. This is through the Paunsdorf 163 allotment. It allows the lake to be supplied with rainwater from the industrial area.
Planned measures for completing the Bürgerpark began in 2013. They included finishing the path system. This involved building an observation terrace on the southern hill. Additional planting and a bridge complete the park. This bridge crosses the landscape lake. After finishing the Bürgerpark the next step is developing a green connection. This will link the old village of Paunsdorf with the Großen Garten. The Grüne Bogen Paunsdorf is more than just a park. It is a living space for both people and animals. It shows how urban development and nature conservation can go hand in hand.
