“Built in 1905” That’s the inscription above the entrance to Grundschule Naundorf. This isn’t just any school. Grundschule Naundorf in Radebeul near Dresden boasts a rich history. It stands as a testament to the evolution of education in the region. This magnificent building is more than just brick and mortar. It’s a living chronicle.

The Grundschule Naundorf wasn’t the first school in Naundorf. Before its construction in 1905 the community relied on makeshift classrooms. Children were taught in the homes of local farmers. Imagine the cozy yet crowded scenes. The first recorded teacher Martin Kirchbach taught from 1649 to 1657. He moved from farm to farm. He was fed by the families whose children he taught. His successors continued this tradition. They too served the neighboring villages of Naundorf and Zitzschewig.

The need for a proper school building was felt. The first community-owned school was built in 1783. However it only had one classroom. It was also used as a community center. By 1877 the village had outgrown this small school. A larger school was erected then soon became too small too. The current building finally opened its doors in 1905. The brothers Kießling designed it. The Großer brothers built it. It was the third school built in Naundorf.

Grundschule Naundorf’s architecture is stunning. The three-story building features a distinctive asymmetrical facade. One side has a volutes-decorated gable. This is topped by a tent roof. The main entrance is marked by the inscription “Unseren Kindern 1905” meaning “To our children”. A slated turret with a clock sits on the other side. Sandstone surrounds the windows. The interior is equally impressive. A grand double staircase with granite steps awaits. Art Nouveau grilles and terrazzo floors adorn the halls. Between 1918 and 1938 stained-glass windows depicting scenes from Grimm’s fairy tales were added. These were donated in stages.

Next to the main school building stands the gymnasium. It was built in 1914-1915. This structure boasts a hipped roof and a small turret. The school even housed a war kitchen during World War I. It supported needy residents from December 1916 to September 1919. In 1919 it became a middle school. It had eight teachers and classes equivalent to a secondary school.

Grundschule Naundorf has weathered significant changes. Its name changed under the Nazi regime. Then again after the fall of the Berlin Wall it reverted to being a primary school. The school’s history mirrors the larger historical context of the region. It remains a hub of learning and community. It’s a place where children continue to learn and grow. Grundschule Naundorf stands proud. It’s a reminder of the dedication to education throughout generations.
