Grundschule Bossental

Had you ever imagined a school named after a valley? Right here in Kassel’s Fasanenhof district, nestled next to the Bossental valley, stands the Grundschule Bossental. The Grundschule Bossental isn’t just any school. Its story began in September 1963. The initial construction included four classrooms and an administration wing, connected by a hallway perfect for playtime. A large schoolyard, three fountains, and a sculpture completed the scene. The school, initially named Grundschule Hildebrandtstrasse, officially opened in April 1965, becoming Kassel’s 30th elementary school. The Grundschule Bossental continued to grow. In 1970, four more classrooms, a workshop, and a multipurpose room were added. A third phase of construction followed in 1975, adding yet another four classrooms, a common room, a resource room, and several smaller rooms. This expansion cost about 1.1 million German marks. Interestingly, due to declining student numbers, a branch of the Kassel City Library moved into two converted classrooms in 1979. Grundschule Bossental finally got its current name in 1990, during its 25th-anniversary celebration. The renaming ceremony took place on December 14th, attended by long-time principal Carola Siebert, city councilor Christine Schmarsow, and Pastor Martin Dippel from the nearby Versöhnungskirche. Grundschule Bossental is also recognized for its commitment to environmental education. In December 2006, alongside Kassel’s Joseph-von-Eichendorff-Schule, it was named a “Hessian Environmental School”. Today, Grundschule Bossental offers classes from first to fourth grade. It embraces a philosophy of inclusive learning and has operated a full-day program since November 2011. This program, called “Learning in the Bossental,” reflects a collaboration with the municipal daycare center also located in the Bossental area. The school also partners with the Alexander-Schmorell-Schule, a school for children with disabilities. This partnership includes two joint classes where students from both schools learn together.
