What whispers does the wind carry across the sands of Grumari? Grumari is a world apart from Rio’s bustling cityscapes. It’s a hidden gem. Here, nature reigns supreme. Grumari is the least populated neighborhood in Rio de Janeiro, a testament to its protected status. It’s a place where the wild beaches remain untouched, much like they were centuries ago. Grumari isn’t just a name on a map. It’s a word that echoes the whispers of the past, derived from the indigenous words “curu” meaning pebbles or loose stones, and “mari” meaning “that which produces water”. Even the very trees on the slopes share this ancient name. Grumari is cradled by the Serra do Grumari, Serra de Guaratiba, and Serra de Piabas. This makes it the last truly preserved natural area on Rio’s coastline. It’s part of the Parque Natural Municipal do Grumari. It became a protected area in 1985 by the state and in 1986 by the municipality. Once isolated and accessible only via the winding Estrada Velha de Grumari from Barra de Guaratiba or a colonial trail through the Serra de Piabas, access opened up in the 1970s. The Avenida Estado da Guanabara now connects Grumari to Recreio dos Bandeirantes. Within Grumari’s embrace lies a haven for every nature lover. Sunbathers can bask on the sands of Grumari Beach. Naturists can find solace at Abricó Beach. Surfers can challenge the waves at Prainha, a spot so revered it’s a protected environmental area and hosts national and international surf competitions. This Prainha was once part of the colonial estate of Catarina de Sá e Benevides, a whisper of history carried on the ocean breeze. For the adventurous, the wild, pristine beaches of Perigoso, do Meio, Funda, and do Inferno beckon. These hidden gems can only be reached by trail or by sea. Grumari’s beauty also extends to its natural parks. It sits within the boundaries of both the Parque Natural Municipal de Grumari and the Parque Estadual da Pedra Branca, ensuring its preservation for generations to come. Grumari isn’t just a place. It’s an experience. It’s a journey into the heart of Rio’s natural beauty. It is a place where the whispers of the past and the promise of the future meet.
