Towering high above the bustling streets of Altona Meadows, you’ll find GROW Art Project Flower Sculpture – an imposing, steel structure that dominates the corner of Queen and Merton Streets. This striking work of art, created by Jonathan Leahey in 2011, is a mesmerizing blend of nature and industry. The flower, crafted from corten steel with an oxidized patina, stands tall and proud, its stem a sturdy, internal galvanized pipe superstructure. At its heart, a mirrored stainless steel stamen catches the sunlight, reflecting the vibrant energy of the surrounding community. The sculpture is a symbol of the area’s future – a beacon of hope and potential. It reflects the history of the place too, with its central reflective “face” mirroring the lives of the people who call Altona Meadows home. But GROW Art Project Flower Sculpture is also a celebration of the diverse population of the neighborhood.
