Only Groveland Park remains of Stephen A Douglas’s original developments. Its charming homes cluster around an oval park. Imagine this peaceful oasis nestled between Cottage Grove Avenue 33rd Street 35th Street and the Metra Electric tracks.

Groveland Park is more than just pretty houses and green space. It’s a living testament to Chicago’s past. Stephen Douglas a prominent Illinois politician and Abraham Lincoln’s rival once owned this land. He envisioned grand estates and private parks. Sadly he never saw his vision fully realized. He died before his plans came to fruition.

Douglas purchased 70 acres along the lake. He built a house and donated land for the first University of Chicago. The Civil War interrupted his plans. Camp Douglas a Union training and prisoner of war camp was established on his property. Thousands of Confederate soldiers tragically died there. The poor conditions contributed to their deaths.

The area developed and changed over time. Jewish families built a hospital and synagogue. Irish workers built homes and St James Church. During the 20th century Douglas and nearby Grand Boulevard became the heart of Black Metropolis or Bronzeville. This area was a hub for black culture and businesses. It thrived until the Great Depression. The stock market crash devastated many black-owned businesses.

Urban renewal projects reshaped the landscape. The projects caused extensive changes. Much of the neighborhood was demolished. Only Groveland Park survived. Today it stands as a reminder of this vibrant history. It showcases a unique blend of architectural styles. It’s a quiet haven amidst the bustling city. It offers a glimpse into Chicago’s layered past.
