Deep within Grove Park Cemetery lies a story waiting to be told. This isn’t just any cemetery. Grove Park Cemetery is a landscape of special historic interest. It’s more than rows of headstones. It’s a carefully planned layout specific to the 1930s.

Grove Park Cemetery opened in 1935. Before its creation, St Paul’s Churchyard in Deptford closed because it was full. The Burial Board then bought land for a new cemetery in Brockley. This became Brockley Cemetery. By 1930, even Brockley Cemetery was nearly full. So, the Deptford Burial Board bought undeveloped land in Grove Park. H Morley Lawson, the Borough Surveyor, designed the site. Thus, Grove Park Cemetery was born.

The cemetery has a special layout. A wide avenue leads to a central circle. Paths radiate from this circle. Terracing with steps and seats creates a garden-like feel. It offers a more fluid design than rigid rows of gravestones.

Grove Park Cemetery holds memorials to those killed in the World Wars. Fifty-six Commonwealth War Graves commemorate service members who died in WWII. They came from the local community. A memorial wall lists those without marked graves. Nearby stands a memorial to Deptford civilians who died in WWII. They are buried in a mass grave.

The planting within Grove Park Cemetery is noteworthy. Willows, limes, cypresses, and hawthorns dot the landscape. Floral beds near the entrance add color. Mature trees of various species, both native and exotic, thrive here.

H Morley Lawson designed Grove Park Cemetery. He was the Borough of Deptford’s surveyor. The cemetery opened on June 1, 1935. It blends formal and informal elements. These include a monumental drive and terraced garden areas in ‘moderne style’. A two-story brick gate lodge stands to the southeast of the entrance. Opposite the entrance drive is a single-story office with a verandah. A Vernacular-style chapel stands along the main drive. An Art Deco-style drinking fountain commemorates the cemetery’s opening.

Helmuth Barth, a circus horse trainer, is buried here. Born around 1906, Helmuth came to England to work for the Great Carmo Circus. He worked with his stepfather, Captain Emmerich Ankner. Helmuth later trained horses for Sanger’s Circus. Known professionally as Charles Barth, he managed performing horses. Helmuth died in September 1946 and was buried in Grove Park Cemetery.

Grove Park Cemetery remains in municipal ownership today. Walking through Grove Park Cemetery offers a peaceful experience. The cemetery is a testament to history, design, and remembrance. It’s a place where the past connects with the present.
