How resilient can a nation be? Here at the Grove of Peace War memorial, we remember the unshakeable spirit of the Maltese people during World War Two. This memorial, erected in 1994, stands as a testament to their extraordinary courage. It’s a joint tribute from the Australian and Maltese governments, the City of Melbourne, and the Maltese community here. It’s not dedicated to a battle won or a hero’s sacrifice. It honours the entire population of Malta, the first British Commonwealth country to receive the George Cross. This award, second only to the Victoria Cross, recognizes their unwavering spirit in the face of relentless enemy attacks. Imagine enduring constant bombardment. From January 1st to July 24th, 1942, bombs fell on Malta every single day except for one 24-hour period. People sought refuge underground, but even there, hardship was a constant companion. Health deteriorated, malnutrition spread, and scabies became rampant. But the Maltese people endured. Their resilience, driven by eight core values – faith, hope, charity, peace, fortitude, temperance, justice, and prudence – is forever etched on the plaques of this memorial. They remind us that even in the darkest hours, the human spirit can triumph.
