Did Étienne Dolet ever imagine his name gracing a school in Paris? Here we stand before Groupe Scolaire Étienne Dolet, a tribute to a man whose life was a whirlwind of scholarship, rebellion, and ultimately, tragedy. Groupe Scolaire Étienne Dolet, an elementary school located on rue Étienne-Dolet in the 20th arrondissement, carries the legacy of a remarkable figure. Dolet, born in Orléans in 1509, was a true Renaissance man. He excelled as a humanist, writer, poet, and printer. His passionate pursuit of knowledge and unwavering belief in freedom of expression led him down a dangerous path.

Dolet’s time in Toulouse during the 1530s marked a turning point. He delivered fiery speeches, criticizing the city’s perceived barbarity and challenging religious superstitions. This outspokenness landed him in prison and resulted in his banishment. He found refuge in Lyon, the heart of French humanism, where he mingled with luminaries like Clément Marot and Rabelais. Dolet even worked as a corrector for the renowned printer Sébastien Gryphe. He later established his own printing press, producing nearly 90 works in just four years. These included student manuals, classical texts, and contemporary literature, even a controversial edition of Rabelais’s Gargantua.

Groupe Scolaire Étienne Dolet reminds us of Dolet’s dedication to education and his contribution to the world of letters. Ironically, a quarter of his printed works were religious texts, including a French version of the New Testament and Calvin’s “Institutes of the Christian Religion.” This did not shield him from the scrutiny of the Inquisition. His “Cato Christianus,” a catechism modeled on the popular “Disticha Catonis,” was deemed heretical and banned.

Dolet’s life was a series of imprisonments, escapes, and appeals. He was accused of atheism and heresy for publishing controversial works and translating a passage from Plato’s “Axiochus” that questioned the immortality of the soul. His additions to the translation, adding “du tout” (at all) to “After death, you will be nothing,” became a focal point of the accusations. In 1546, he was condemned to death. On the place Maubert, a place often used for executing printers, Dolet was hanged and then burned along with his books. He was only 37 years old. Groupe Scolaire Étienne Dolet stands as a testament to this complex figure, a man who dared to challenge the established order, a martyr for free speech and a champion of knowledge.
