Beneath the towering cliffs near Cap Morgiou lies a submerged treasure. It is the Grotte de la Triperie. This marine cave holds secrets from both nature and human history.

The Grotte de la Triperie is more than just a pretty grotto. It is a designated historical monument. This designation recognizes its significance alongside other caves in the Calanques massif like the famous Grotte Cosquer.

Imagine explorer Henri Cosquer. In 1985, he discovered the entrance to a hidden world at the cliff’s edge. This discovery wasn’t the Grotte de la Triperie itself but the Grotte Cosquer nearby. The entrance to the Grotte Cosquer is situated at the cliff’s edge of the Grotte de la Triperie. He found it 37 meters beneath the surface. The entrance was a 175-meter-long tunnel.

Cosquer returned to the cave multiple times. In 1991, his dive light revealed a painted hand on the wall. Astonished, he photographed it. After developing the film, more hands and animals appeared. Penguins, seals and bison populated the ancient artwork. Cosquer tried to keep his discovery secret.

Tragedy struck when three divers died in the cave’s central tunnel. Cosquer had to reveal his find. Authorities closed the Grotte Cosquer due to its danger. Only scientists could enter. Experts confirmed the cave was a Paleolithic site. Its art dated back 27,000 years.

The Grotte Cosquer contains art from two distinct periods. The first is 33000 years ago during the Gravettian era. This period is known for Venus figurines and negative hand paintings. The Grotte Cosquer has 65 of these handprints made using stencils. The second period dates back 19000 years. During this time, artists drew animals such as horses, ibexes, bison and unique creatures like seals and penguins. In total, there are 117 animal figures.

The Grotte Cosquer is not open to the public. Concrete blocks seal the entrance to protect it and prevent accidents. However, a replica has been created at the Villa Méditerranée. This allows visitors to experience the cave’s wonders without the danger.

The real Grotte Cosquer faces a dire threat. Rising sea levels, caused by climate change, are swallowing the cave. The entrance is already 37 meters underwater. The remaining fifth of the cave is at risk. The cave is being lost bit by bit.

The replica includes a pontoon and a dive club recreation. Visitors descend in an elevator simulating a dive to 37 meters. They then explore the replica. It features the same geological details and paintings as the original.

The replica aims to educate the public about the cave and the effects of climate change. The Grotte Cosquer serves as a reminder of our past. It highlights the urgent need to address our planet’s rising sea levels. While we cannot enter the Grotte de la Triperie, we can appreciate it as the cliff’s edge to this submerged gateway of the Grotte Cosquer. It is a place where art and nature intertwine, and a testament to human history.
