Hidden in plain sight, the Großsteingrab Ratekau whispers tales of ancient lives. This isn’t its original resting place. The Großsteingrab Ratekau began its journey in nearby Sereetz. It was discovered in 1979 during some routine fieldwork. The Großsteingrab Ratekau, also known as the Dolmen of Ratekau, had been slumbering for millennia. Originally, the site was an impressive pit, roughly 10 by 8 meters and remarkably deep. Four large stones formed the north and south walls of the chamber. Sadly, the western end stone and two capstones were lost before the official discovery. Imagine the complete structure! The perimeter was lined with fieldstones of varying sizes, and smaller stones sealed the west side. Inside, a preserved floor of burnt flint hinted at ancient rituals within the 2 by 1.4-meter chamber. Human remains, likely two men aged 17-25 and 35-45, confirmed its purpose as a burial site. Their journey ended here, but their story continues through the artifacts left behind. Shards of pottery, polished flint axes, arrowheads of various designs, and a fragment of an amber bead suggest a burial much later than the original construction during the Funnelbeaker culture (around 4000-2800 BC). This points to a later use, possibly by the Bell Beaker people at the end of the Neolithic period. The Großsteingrab Ratekau now resides in the center of Ratekau, near the fieldstone church and the Wilhelm Oak. The current capstones are modern additions, placed during the reconstruction. Though its original location is lost, the Großsteingrab Ratekau continues to share its story, a tangible link to the people who lived, and died, thousands of years ago.
