Imagine the effort. The sheer strength to move these massive boulders. These are not ordinary rocks. These are glacial erratics brought here from afar. They were carefully placed forming a long chamber. It measures roughly eight meters long and 3.5 meters wide. The interior is more compact only about five meters long 1.5 meters wide and less than a meter high.
In 1857 the Großsteingrab Blankensee underwent excavation. Archaeologists unearthed human remains. Two pottery shards were also found offering clues to daily life during the Neolithic era. Interestingly they also found a flint axe and a bronze knife suggesting possible later burials during the Bronze Age. The original earth mound was partially removed during the excavation. That’s why the Großsteingrab Blankensee now sits in a slight depression. The original filling between the visible stones was also taken away.
The Großsteingrab Blankensee isn’t simply a tomb. Its D-shape is unique. The slightly skewed placement of the chamber is rare. Only a few similar structures exist. The arrangement of the stones ten in an arc to the northwest five others to the southwest is significant. It shows the careful planning and execution involved in its creation. The supporting stones the capstones the entrance all reveal skilled construction. The largest capstone is in the west. The stones decrease in size towards the east.
