Did the Grand Duke foresee his monument’s pivotal role in Karlsruhe’s history? The Großerherzog-Karl-Denkmal, right here in the heart of Schlossplatz, has witnessed more than just the changing seasons. This monument, dedicated to Grand Duke Karl Friedrich, stands as a symbol of his progressive reforms. He ruled for 65 years and ushered in an era of change. The monument depicts him holding the decree abolishing serfdom in Baden, a testament to his commitment to justice. Unveiled in 1844, the Großerherzog-Karl-Denkmal is the work of sculptor Ludwig Schwanthaler. Four female figures adorn the base. They represent the regions of Baden: Altbaden, the land along the Main and Neckar rivers, the Black Forest, and the Lake Constance area. Interestingly, the monument wasn’t always here. In 1967, during the Bundesgartenschau, it was moved and reoriented to face the city. Later, during the Schlossplatz renovations in 2011-2012, it was placed within a surrounding water feature. This seemingly tranquil monument also bears witness to darker times. In 1933, a book burning took place in front of it, a stark reminder of the fragility of freedom. The Großerherzog-Karl-Denkmal stands as a powerful symbol of progress, resilience, and the enduring spirit of Karlsruhe.
